Our Start
Ethel and Al Smith founded B.G. Loan & Jewelry Co. in September 1959, becoming the first pawn shop in Bell Gardens. Al, a former boxer, saved and invested his earnings into a jewelry and loan business. Over time, he sold the jewelry store to focus on his loan firm. Both Al and Ethel were heavily involved in community service, donating their time to organizations like Rotary and Soroptimist International. They ran B.G. Loan & Jewelry as true partners, sharing responsibilities and working together to create a business built on fairness, honesty, and connection.
Still Family Owned
Today, B.G. Loan & Jewelry Co. is run by Susan Smith, who has invested heavily in customer service, modern operations, and implementing safety improvements. Since taking over, Susan has focused on expanding the business. She has maintained the high level of service that customers have come to expect. Today, she runs the shop with her daughter and son, and with trusted team members Irene and Veronica! Keeping the business both family-run and community-focused.
